07 Nov Mediterranean on the water
This lovely lakeside retreat in northern Alabama is home to friends of ours, John and Amie Embry who grew up in the area and love all that living on the water offers. In their case, it’s also poolside living and access to Wheeler Lake for great boating and fishing.
When you get closer, you see that it’s a Mediterranean inspired house on a well manicured piece of land that Amie and John built and moved into 9 years ago. It’s been a fabulous place to entertain their family and friends.
They did much of the interior finishing work themselves which still amazes my husband and me. That included staining all the trim in the house, and painting. That’s alot of time and trouble but they put the hours in and got what they wanted in their dream home.
The trim is made from poplar wood and the stain they used is merlot.
The foyer is a real showstopper with the soaring ceiling, travertine floors and gorgeous gleaming staircase. The cherry flooring is used throughout the second story which includes the master bedroom and two guest suites.
John had the wrought iron spindles and railing custom made for the staircase.
The dark floors and trim are a nice contrast to the light travertine floors downstairs.
I like the way their cabinets frame the two windows in the kitchen. The accent color on the walls is Pittsburgh Paint’s Copper Beech. The cream color throughout the rest of the downstairs is Benjamin Moore’s Man on the Moon.
The cherry fireplace mantle was also custom made in their den off the kitchen.
Throughout the home, there are Caribbean inspired touches with Tommy Bahama furniture and other island accents.
The Embrys love the water and really use their outdoor space, especially for having their grandchildren over. It feels like a vacation at their house. I don’t see how they can ever leave, but they do take trips when they need a beach get away! They enjoy time here AND along the Gulf coast when they can take time from their schedules to have a different water view.
Back at home though, sunsets on Wheeler Lake can be just as beautiful as anywhere else they may go.
The Embrys have created a wonderful retreat for making memories with their children and grandchildren. And I think it makes it even more special when homeowners are hands on during the building process. It must make them feel even more proud of their little piece of heaven on the lake.
Thanks to John and Amie for all the good times at their fantastic home in Rogersville, Alabama and for sharing it with Stylish Retreats!
