California South

California South

What brings a California girl to Nashville if it isn’t songwriting, school or just soaking up southern culture? Try love,

and houses. As in million dollar plus houses she can update, making them more desirable for the right buyer.

Meet Meg Epstein, who looks like she stepped out of a J Crew catalog.

Stylish; check.  Sharp; check.  Laser focused; check.

But back to the stylish part. And houses.  Meg got the bug to build and renovate houses while studying in Spain during college.

She learned the ropes as the only woman on a construction crew building a home in Los Angeles.  Now she’s a partner in California South, a development company with projects currently in Napa and Nashville. One of her new digs is this mid century modern Belle Meade house she purchased and recently finished updating. It’s also on the market as of this post, listed by Beth Molteni at Fridrich and Clark.

Meg is hoping to bring a cool California feel to Nashville.  To her, that includes elements that are modern, but not harsh, with an emphasis on indoor outdoor living.  This house on Lillywood in Belle Meade met her criteria with good bones, but needed updating.

Growing up in Sacramento in a Victorian farmhouse, she says there were always things to fix around their older house. Cleaner lines and a modern vibe are more appealing to her today.  One reason is there’s less to distract her from the business at hand.

One of my favorite rooms in this  house is the dining room that features a wine wall.

As a California native with business in Napa Valley, Meg understands wine afficianados, thus this feature.  Can’t you picture the dinner parties, and the convenience of turning around in your chair and finding just the right cabernet or chardonnay?

Cabinets throughout the 1960’s era house are original.  Meg says she considers herself a preservationist, respecting the history of this home that was designed by a German architect.

She did a major overhaul of the kitchen.

Custom made cabinets from Heartwood Cabinet Company in Murfreesboro give the center of the home such a clean feel as do the new appliances from A-1 in Belle Meade.

The study tucked in near the back staircase has a view of the plush back yard.

All bedrooms are upstairs.

The master bathroom features two separate sink areas.  Light fixtures are modern, from West Elm.

The view of the pool is framed like a picture in the master bath.

And when you find yourself outside, you feel like you have total privacy in a lush setting, with a beautiful brick patio and walkway.

But this young developer has both feet planted firmly on the ground. She’s digging into Music City with her eye set on renovating Tammy Wynette’s former Franklin road home next.  She and her husband love country music too.

Welcome to Nashville Meg!
