23 Mar Bay Island Beauties
In the 18th Century, Captain James Wright referred to Roatan, Honduras as the “Garden of the West Indies,” and as a visitor, I can say she’s still a beauty.
Just look at the lush hillsides and blue green water. We were able to get another perspective of the largest of the Bay Islands from our friend’s boat when we vacationed there recently. And even though I wrote about a resort on Roatan last week, I just had to share more pictures this time because it’s so memorable.
There’s so much color in the Caribbean and Roatan is no exception. Of course it doesn’t hurt that it’s lush and always blooming. Even some shops are covered in foilage, like this one we stopped in on the main road.
I had always been intrigued by this building. Turns out, most of the shop owner’s inventory comes from Indonesia. Lots of carved wooden pieces. The gorgeous local hardwood found on the mainland of Honduras is used extensively in homes I saw while we were there.
This master bedroom is in a villa on the grounds of one of the premier resorts on the island. A guest room with lovely twin beds had the same beautiful wooden vaulted ceiling, one of my favorite elements in the homes I was able to see.
This is the exterior of the home in Pristine Bay, a golf course community that hugs the coastline with some of the most glorious vistas you can imagine.
Pristine Bay is an exclusive resort community with a championship golf course designed by world renowned architect Pete Dye. And there’s an incredible beach club with views that could rival just about any luxurious setting.
I could go on and on about this sanctuary by the sea. We had been here with friends of ours several years ago on a rainy day, so to see it in this light was spectacular. The restaurants are also beautifully decorated. And there are villas available to purchase or rent.
This one is a rental, owned by Michael Carter, originally from Indiana, but now a full time resident of Roatan with Roatan Life Vacation Rentals. He and his wife own a home at Pristine Bay along with this villa that is available for people wanting a taste of the island life.
Each villa at Pristine Bay has modern conveniences and its own private pool in case you don’t want to use the larger infinity pools at the beach club.
Mike also let us see his private home that captures the same casual island feeling.
It’s no surprise that HGTV’s House Hunters International has featured some of the homes on Roatan as people search for an island retreat.
This is another beauty we found while driving through Parrot Tree Plantation, another resort full of lovely homes and accomodations for visitors.
So if you’re adventurous and looking for the island vibe, this may be for you. And there may be a surprise for you when visiting a busy beach.
I didn’t hold the little monkey but he was quite a crowd pleaser that day. Whether you’re on a public beach or you prefer the solitude of a private villa setting, it’s a tropical paradise that attracts divers, bird lovers and fishermen alike. Roatan will leave a visual imprint in your memory of island style that is rustic and welcoming.
As the sun goes down, there’s more beauty that unfolds. Thanks to our friends, the Ellises, for the opportunity to discover Roatan, and to the Addisons and Mike Carter for showing me around the island.
