Ranch renovation in Brentwood

Ranch renovation in Brentwood

A friend of mine who’s a busy mother of three young kids recently said I could finally come over and take pictures of their renovation that I’d been bugging her about for months and now I see why.

Their ranch style home in Brentwood was very nice before this overhaul but now there’s a real “WOW” factor when you enter and get to the kitchen.

With architect Catherine Sloan at the helm, and designer Emy Riley’s eye for details,  Caroline and Frank Durst added just 400 square feet to their house but totally transformed it with changes that included higher ceilings in their brand new kitchen and dining area with a wall of windows, cased openings, along with other improvements throughout the sun drenched house.

The gorgeous island is topped with “bianca gioia” marble and even though marble can stain easily, Caroline said she’s just decided to “embrace it” and not worry about it with three young children.  Like most families, this is where they spend the majority of their time and it’s very comfortable.

The good looking light fixtures over the island and the kitchen table are from Visual Comfort at Ferguson.  Hardware and appliances are also from Ferguson. The base cabinets in the island were painted with Iron Ore from Sherwin Williams.

The counter height chairs were purchased at Pier One. They’re really comfortable too, and the color is good with kids and spills.

Caroline added a china cabinet in her kitchen where she displays some dishes that were given to her by family members.  If you look in the background, you can also see more built in cabinets that serve as a pantry.  Of course this is open to the family room which is very comfortable with lots of seating and a fireplace.  Shiplap is used on the accent wall behind the couch.  The paint color is Light Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

The  cool coffee table, art over the fireplace and pillows in the two chairs are all from Spruce in Brentwood, as are many other accessories throughout the home.

There’s also a more casual playroom for the kids where they raised the ceiling and added some new accents to freshen the space, including a great looking beaded light fixture from Pottery Barn.  And the metallic poufs came from Home Goods.  More shiplap is used in this space.

There is a small formal living room with a fantastic wall hanging Caroline purchased at a store that is no longer in business in Florence, Alabama where I used to shop too. It came from a theatre and I remember when she bought it because I loved it too!

The handsome couch is from Sprintz and navy chairs are from Two for Home in Nashville.

The kids all had a say in their bedroom decor.  Their daughter chose an upholstered headboard from Ballard that is a beautiful apricot color and picks up the bird color in the picture.  So sweet.

The boys also selected things in their rooms.

Caroline looks forward to changing this decor but it’s what Frank wanted.   Most of the pieces are from Target, Ikea and West Elm.  Quite sporty.

The twin headboards in this bedroom are from Target.

In the master bedroom, Caroline used a soothing lilac as an accent color in her custom bedding.

This lamp was custom made from an urn she found.  It makes it so much more personal when you can take a piece you love and turn it into something useful in your home.

Renovations are never easy but the end result is sure worth the time and trouble to end up with this stylish space!

My thanks  to Caroline for sharing her lovely stylish retreat.  And thanks to you for coming along for this house tour!
