This is one of the most elegant staircases I’ve ever had the pleasure of walking up and down. Very carefully I might add. It’s considered a double helix iron staircase. It and the unusual African onyx stone sculpture made a grand statement in this home.
The exquisite stairs are part of a fashionable home in Midtown Manhattan where my husband’s cousin, Missy Dewing lives with her husband, Andrew. Missy grew up in Nashville but has called New York home for many years. We recently visited and of course I had to take pictures and include their home in Stylish Retreats, because, well, you’ll see.
Every table top has unique figures, or beautiful books and other interesting accents that draw you in closer.
Their home, located off Sutton Place in Midtown Manhattan, was built in the 1920’s and is in a pre-war co-op. It’s a two story maisonette, which means it has its own entrance, and is like a separate home within another building. It’s quite luxe.
Their style could best be described as a mix of New York minimalist and London townhouse style. Much of their furniture comes from England and France where they lived before coming back to New York. The living room is fairly neutral with some pale blue, gold, taupe, and black accents. Love her large silver tray on the iron and limestone coffee table. Missy has an incredible eye, but she’s an artist so it’s really not a surprise.
The large piece on the living room wall is actually a collage of old fashion magazines depicting actress Uma Thurman’s mother. They found it at the Southampton Long Island Art Fair, and it was from a San Diego gallery. She, like her surroundings, is so elegant.
The figure is a Cambodian Bayan period statue that Missy found at an auction in London. It and another one like it used to sit in front of the arched mirrors at their home in France, but now those mirrors, and other treasures have taken up residence here. The chairs are covered in a tobacco brushed suede. The curtains are made of thai silk taffeta.
The dining room table with scrolled leaves around the base came from Vence in France, near the home they used to own. I remember so many of these lovely pieces and the art from their gorgeous home there.
The walls are painted with Farrow and Ball’s Brinjal. The color is characterized by Farrow and Ball as “a sophisticated aubergine (eggplant) that can create a warm and highly sophisticated finish when used on walls.” It’s also considered flattering to skin tones so you feel more attractive when sitting in a room with this color. I like that. Speaking of attractive, the wooden bar is so good looking and a great way to hide your spirits.
And of course, a precious little spirit in fur, Betty, adds style to the Dewings space. She’s a brussels griffon who also gets to spend time in the Hamptons where they have a second home. I’ll be sharing those pictures next week, along with a tour of some of the most beautiful gardens in East Hampton, put on by ARF, the animal rescue fund of the Hamptons. Here’s a sneak peek.
A bed of peonies.
And wait til you see some of the others! Until then, happy summer and happy gardening. And of course, my thanks to Missy and Andrew for being such gracious hosts and sharing two wonderful and completely different stylish retreats.
Thanks for reading and sharing!
